OPAL
OPAL Lunchtime Play at Stroud Green Primary
At Stroud Green Primary, we believe that play is a vital part of childhood. It is how children explore, create, take risks, solve problems, build friendships and develop their independence. That is why we are proud to be developing OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) across our school.
OPAL is an approach to play that transforms lunchtimes into rich, exciting opportunities for children to learn through play. Rather than seeing playtime as simply a break between lessons, OPAL recognises that it is an important part of the school day — a time when children can make choices, follow their own ideas, challenge themselves and learn from one another.
Through OPAL, we are creating a lunchtime environment that is inclusive, imaginative and full of possibility, with a wide range of spaces, resources and opportunities for children to play in different ways. Children are encouraged to use their creativity, be active, take appropriate risks, collaborate and develop their own games and ideas.
OPAL is closely connected to our core vision and values:
- Fair – Every child deserves a rich and rewarding playtime where they feel included, have choices and can find ways to play that work for them.
- Ambitious – We want children to be ambitious in their play: to imagine, experiment, persevere, solve problems and discover what they are capable of.
- Adventurous – OPAL gives children opportunities to explore, challenge themselves and experience manageable risk, helping them develop confidence and resilience.
- Kind – Play is a powerful way to develop friendships, empathy, cooperation and respect. We want our playground to be a place where everyone feels welcome and valued.
- Adaptable – Play rarely goes exactly to plan! Children learn to negotiate, compromise, think creatively, change direction and respond to new situations — skills that are essential both in school and beyond.
Most importantly, OPAL gives children ownership of their play. It allows them to be active participants in shaping their lunchtime experience, rather than simply being directed by adults.
We know that high-quality play supports children's physical, social, emotional and cognitive development, and we believe that children who have the opportunity to play well are better equipped to learn, connect and thrive.
At Stroud Green, OPAL is about creating better play, better relationships and happier lunchtimes — while helping our children grow into the fair, ambitious, adventurous, kind and adaptable people we want them to become.
