School Council

What is the role of school council?

The school council is a representative group of children elected by their peers to represent their views and raise issues with the senior managers and governors of the school. The school council plans and carries out initiatives and projects on behalf of its peers. They are involved in strategic planning and processes such as school policy changes and reporting to governing body meetings.

School council allows children to:

 Enjoy and feel empowered by their education.

 Feel that their school responds to their needs.

 Have the opportunity to let adults know their feelings and opinions about things that affect them.

 Have a say about decisions and to play an active role in making their school a better place.

 Develop active life skills and become active learners through participation.

 Be a vital part of the school, and of the local, national and global community.

Stroud Green Primary School's Council makes a valued contribution to the successful running of the school.

Each class democratically elects its own Chair and Vice-Chair, who work on behalf of their classmates to make a positive contribution to their school and its environment. The School Council then elects a Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer.

Once elected, councillors take a lead on promoting positive behaviour, fundraising and ensuring that the pupils' voices are heard on school issues. The Chair of each class council meets the Head Teacher every two weeks.  They share their class views on topics such as school activities, school meals, playgrounds and fundraising events.  Members of the school council support the head teacher in representing the school at events and meetings.  They play a crucial role in representing our school in the local community.
